The Importance of a Diverse Data Team

Not only is having a diverse data team the right thing to do, it’s also vital in gaining the best insights for your business. When it comes to analysing data, you need diversity.

A statistically significant relationship has been found between a more diverse leadership team and better financial performance. Gender diversity and Ethnic diversity in companies has been shown to significantly affect financial returns above the national industry average. Diversity is needed in all teams for aspects such as winning top talent, employee satisfaction, and decision making. In data teams, reliable and innovative solutions to problems are more likely to be reached when working in a team with a variety of perspectives and experiences.

Only 17% of employees in the UK tech sector are women, research reveals

The problem starts early; only 7% of students taking computer science A-level courses are female. From there, as few as half of the girls that study IT & Tech subjects at school go into a job in the same field. The industry average of 17% is surprisingly low, but Kubrick Group are trying to battle against this, and with an in-house average of around 35% women that make up our consultants, we think we’re heading in the right direction. We aim to have a 50/50 split of consultants and we run an initiative; data.inclusive which looks exactly at tackling this issue within the industry.

  • Provide exposure and spread the word of data and tech careers to women and other under-represented groups
  • Educate businesses as to why they should strive for a diverse data team
  • Build community and provide a platform to unite like-minded individuals in the industry, to share ideas and provide technical support

The dangers of a homogenous team:

When it comes to working with data in a business, a homogenous team can be quite detrimental. If a team of similar ages, gender and ethnicity are looking at a problem, the solutions they come up with and the way in which they work with the data could result in an inherent bias. Invaluable insights could be missed out on due to a lack of diversity within the team.
