On Tuesday 16th July 2024, we hosted a highly successful one-day boot camp at our London office in partnership with Databricks...
The purpose of this one-day bootcamp was to introduce charities and not-for-profit organisations to the fundamentals of the Databricks platform and help them transform their new ways of working through a blend of talks, demonstrations, and interactive break-out sessions.
Over the course of the day, attendees were introduced to a range of approaches, including Data Lakehousing and Data Warehousing, which help organisations manage and utilise their data. They were also given a hands-on lab session in SQL and Databricks, navigating the workspace and performing exercises to enhance their understanding.
This was followed by a series of breakout sessions in the afternoon which focused on advanced topics such as modelling on the Lakehouse and serverless administration, expanding their knowledge in specialised areas. The event concluded with a networking session, which allowed participants to discuss insights and future collaborations over refreshments.
The event was well-attended, with data professionals across several notable charities and non-profit organisations including Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI), British Red Cross, Jisc, and Marie Curie leveraging the training and gaining useful insights that will support their current and future Databricks strategies.
Marie Curie, known for its work in providing care and support to people living with terminal illnesses, sees great potential in leveraging Databricks for data management and analysis. Neil Venables, Head of Data Engineering at Marie Curie, shared his thoughts:
"We are refreshing our platform and want to refresh all our data products. It is becoming increasingly obvious to us that to do that we need to separate computer from storage. Today has been great as it has enabled us to meet Databricks and Kubrick and see how they can support us on our data journey. Events such as these are also brilliant as when you hear about new technologies through white papers and YouTube videos, it all feels abstract and can be scary but putting it into practice helps remove that uncertainty and doubt and shows how such tools can be used to really drive change."
Databricks was also very pleased with the event's outcome. Pritesh Patel, Public Sector Leader at Databricks, stated:
"We’re excited to do more work with not-for-profit organisations as they’re having such a positive impact on society through the work they deliver, and we want to help them make a difference. Through our products and services, we can modernise their ways of working and give them vital access to a wealth of untapped data, enabling them to be more insights-driven and save both time and money. The purpose of yesterday’s session was to bring together charities and not-for-profit organisations and give them useful insights that can help drive change. It was great to see so many people across the sector in attendance, and the feedback at the end of the day was overwhelmingly positive. We’re grateful to Kubrick for hosting this session and look forward to working with them on a range of philanthropic initiatives in the coming months and years."
