The challenge
Medical Aid Films (MAF) is an award-winning digital content provider (UK Charity), bringing together world-class health experts with creative content makers to create engaging, accessible digital health content, which empowers health workers and communities with vital knowledge and skills. Their extensive film archive (700+ health education films in 49 languages) has over 10 million digital views per year, making a significant impact around the world. However, they wanted to become more data-led with their decision-making so they could maximise the impact of any future content, and increase the likelihood of external investment.
The objective of this partnership was to identify areas where Medical Aid Films could improve their use of data, help spread data literacy to their team, and create products that would give them useful insights regarding their content.
The solution
The project was delivered by Kubrick in three main phases:
Phase 1: Scoping
Kubrick and Medical Aid Films had several scoping meetings where a blend of Kubrick Advanced consultants and Associate Principals had the opportunity to learn about Medical Aid Films’ vital work and objectives.
Phase two: 2-week hackathon
Once scoped, Kubrick deployed a team of 19 Data Engineers in training to work on a 2-week hackathon-style project, whereby they created a social media dashboard that would allow the charity to visualise key metrics, perform trend analysis, and measure impact at an individual film level.
This was the most exciting and fast-moving part of the project, where many milestones were reached as the consultants worked together to quickly overcome technical challenges as they arose.
Data feeds to Medical Aid Film’s Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and Vimeo were created which retrieve the latest activity on an automated schedule. Version 1 of the Power BI dashboard was created, to show Medical Aid Film’s data in an information way.
Phase three: Further development
Following the 2-week build, a blend of data engineers, cloud engineers, and data management consultants across the Kubrick landscape volunteered their time to support with the improvement and productionization of the dashboard, so it was fit for everyday use by the charity.
This phase was managed by Associate Principals Elmira Ahmedova and Andy Keel, who used their areas of expertise to support across various areas including cloud deployment and data visualisation. The team also advised Medical Aid Films on how best to implement Power BI into their systems so they could continue utilising the dashboard whilst keeping costs to a minimum.
The results
Since the creation of the dashboard, Medical Aid Films have doubled their capacity to make timely strategic decisions based on real-time data, given their decision-making was previously informed by manual data collection. The dashboard has also enabled the charity to make better decisions on their content production, prioritising information and formats that speak to their audiences and channels where engagement rates are higher.
Medical Aid Films also have a monitoring and evaluation framework that measures their reach and effectiveness in relation to those who integrate the films into their health work and their primary audiences of women, families and communities in disadvantaged locations. The partnership has significantly increased the charity’s capacity to implement the framework and thereby measure longer-term outcomes, meaning they can gather more detailed, quantitative data around views and watch times and monitor qualitative reactions and feedback for individual films and languages.
Lastly, this partnership has enabled Medical Aid Films to quickly respond to opportunities in external funding and corporate partnerships around digital and technology; a vital requirement for any charity.
