Kubrick helps power world-first mobile green hydrogen breakthrough with DRIFT Energy
How Kubrick’s data engineering and advanced analytics expertise turned wind power into scalable clean energy
August 2, 2022 – London
Using purpose-built hydrofoil sailboats, DRIFT Energy has successfully generated green hydrogen at sea and safely transported it back to port, marking a world first for mobile clean energy.
The groundbreaking sea trials took place off the coast of Brightlingsea, Essex earlier this month and were declared a major success, demonstrating the viability of wind powered hydrogen production.
Kubrick is proud to have supported this landmark achievement, helping DRIFT Energy scale rapidly from concept to operational reality in under a year.
Working in close partnership, DRIFT Energy collaborated with Kubrick to deploy 30 Data Engineers during a focused two week sprint. Our consultants applied advanced analytics and next generation technology to maximize the performance and return of DRIFT’s autonomous vessels, which convert wind energy into hydrogen fuel.
By analyzing wind and wave data, our team developed a sophisticated routing algorithm to identify optimal operating conditions. This ensures minimal wave interference, reduces operational risk, and protects vessel integrity. The algorithm is central to DRIFT Energy’s operations and delivers a unique advantage by enabling truly mobile renewable energy.
Dan Tomlinson, Head of Kubrick Advanced, said: “We are thrilled to have been involved in this initiative, utilizing our consultants’ expertise to deliver real world solutions to a global challenge. As technology continues to evolve, it is our responsibility to use our skills for good. DRIFT Energy is making significant strides toward a greener future, and we are proud to support their mission.”
Green hydrogen, destined for commercial use in the global net zero transition, has never before been produced in this way anywhere in the world.
DRIFT Energy recently showcased its world first technology at SailGP in Plymouth, Cornwall, the most sustainable on water sporting event to date. The event featured the largest number of electric solutions ever integrated across a race weekend, supporting SailGP’s ambition to power its entire fleet with clean energy by 2025.
